Bill Ryan

DSF Board Member | Retired Director, Colorado State Land Board

Bill recently retired from 14 years as Director of the Colorado State Land Board, a $4.5 billion intergenerational endowment of land assets held in trust for the benefit of K-12 education throughout the State. The Land Board is the second largest landowner in Colorado with approximately three million surface acres, leased for agriculture, recreation, commercial real estate, rights-of-way, renewable energy, and other uses, and approximately four million acres of mineral estate, leased for oil, natural gas, coal and other solid mineral extraction uses. Under Bill’s leadership, the Land Board earned over $2.5 billion for its beneficiaries, which helped fund the construction or renovation of more than 500 schools in Colorado.

Before this position in State government, Bill’s professional background was in banking and real estate. He spent ten years as a Principal with Trammell Crow Company, a national commercial real estate and development firm, where he developed and acquired projects including mixed-use, TOD, office, industrial, retail, and land. He also spent over 12 years with several national banks’ commercial real estate divisions.

Bill is the past Board Chair of Urban Land Conservancy, a non-profit that acquires, develops, and preserves real estate assets in urban areas to meet community needs, including schools, affordable housing, and community centers, as well as the past Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Denver Foundation. He has a BA in Economics from Emory University.
