Top 5 Ways to Maximize Your Summer While Enjoying Your Break

Apr 18, 2022

The upcoming summer break is a great time to get everything set up so you are successful in whatever adventure you have ahead of you. These top 5 tips will make sure you get the most out of your summer break, balancing productivity and rest!

1. ENROLL IN SUMMER CLASSES AND APPLY FOR THE DSF SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP (NEW THIS YEAR!)

Earning credits over the summer is a great way to stay on track to complete your degree on time and learn new skills. Focusing on one or two classes over the summer is also a great way to help improve your GPA!

Beginning in summer 2022, DSF Scholars may receive a scholarship award for summer courses! To be eligible for a summer award, DSF Scholars must meet the following requirements:

Received a DSF award in academic year 2021-22

Enroll in at least 3 summer credits at a DSF College Partner

Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress at your summer college

2. CONSIDER JOB SHADOWING TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF FUTURE CAREER PATHS

Job shadowing is a great way to get a glimpse into a profession you are interested in pursuing. You may learn what skills you need to continue to develop, grow your network, get your name out there for future reference, and possibly open the door to an internship or job opportunity!

3. TAKE TIME FOR YOUR WELL-BEING

The summer is a great time to focus on your well-being, so try creating goals that will help you prioritize your physical, mental, emotional, and social health. This can include journaling, going for a walk, trying a new form of exercise, meditating, maintaining a healthy sleeping schedule, or practicing gratitude. I Matter Colorado is a program connecting youth to free virtual counseling sessions, which can help you work on your mental health!

4. KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR ADVISORS, PROFESSORS, AND COLLEGE SUPPORT SYSTEM

Your advisors and professors have shared their knowledge and experience with you over the year. Creating relationships with them that last a lifetime can help benefit your education and career journey. You may be able to ask them for a reference letter, which can be used to apply for graduate school or on your resume. By staying connected with your advisors, professors, and college support system, you may hear about opportunities that are incredibly valuable to the next step in your education or career journey!

5. GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY BY VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, meet new people, and learn new skills! You can find volunteering opportunities online or from other students and faculty. Find something you are passionate about in your community and make an impact over the summer by volunteering. It is also a great experience to put on your resume!
