In celebration of DSF’s Annual Gala 2019, DSF welcomed Geoffrey Canada, the keynote speaker of the event, to the Future Center at Manual High School on September 25. Mr. Canada is the founder of Harlem Children’s Zone and is featured prominently in the documentary Waiting for Superman.
During the event, attendees learned about DSF’s College Access programming through a community conversation led by DSF Lead College Advisor, Diana Madriz, and several college-bound high school seniors. Guests experienced an immersion into the Future Center experience by exploring the services offered therein, while hearing about the core challenges that make it difficult for students to navigate the college-going process.
Jared Polis, Governor of Colorado, joined the event and offered remarks in praise of the partnership between DSF and Denver Public Schools (DPS) for their work to support students on their journeys to and through college.
After learning about the services and programming that happens in a DSF Future Center, several college-bound high school seniors shared their personal stories of why college is important to them and how the Future Center has supported them in learning about college.
A question and answer session with Mr. Canada concluded the event.
