Ten years ago, Governor Hickenlooper made a bold promise. Several bold leaders, including Tim and Bernie Marquez, Phil and Nancy Anschutz, Scott and Virginia Reiman, Tom and Noey Congdon, and Senator Michael Bennet helped him lay the groundwork to keep it: every college-qualified graduate from Denver Public Schools should have access to a college or technical school education no matter what their financial circumstances and socioeconomic background.
Ten years later, 5,000 students have received $30 million in scholarship awards from the Denver Scholarship Foundation. In addition, $300 million in other gift aid has been offered to DPS seniors, thanks to leverage provided by the Denver Scholarship Foundation on the students’ behalf.
The investment has been worth it. Three-quarters of our award recipients are in college or have graduated. They are beating national and local college success rates by almost thirty percentage points. Change is coming to Colorado – we will have an educated local workforce that is employable and productive. Three-quarters of all jobs in Colorado will soon require a degree or certificate, and Denver’s low income, minority students will be ready to diversify that workforce as anyone’s equals.
