College Essays:
You will be asked to write essays for college and scholarship applications. Here are some resources to help you brainstorm, write, and edit your essays.
Letters of Recommendation:
Request a letter of recommendation from a teacher that can speak highly of your academic potential and also of your character as a person. Think strategically about who you ask to write you a letter of recommendation and try not to ask more than two teachers for a recommendation.
Resume:
Keep track of all your high school activities. Colleges and scholarships may ask that you provide a list of the activities you participated in throughout your high school career.

Scholarships.
Apply. Apply. Apply.

The cost of postsecondary education increases each year, but there are many ways to reduce what you will pay. The best way to minimize your cost is to apply for scholarships. Scholarships will each have their own application requirements, including GPA, test scores, ethnicity, community service hours, and leadership potential.
Scholarships search engines:
Use the following websites to search for scholarships you qualify for based on your background.
Merit Based Scholarship:
The best places to apply for scholarships are at the universities in which you applied for admission. You will only be competing against other students who were also admitted to that particular institution.
Organization Scholarships:
Many different organizations may offer scholarship money to students. These organizations could be nonprofits, parents’ employers, banks, sororities, fraternities, or social advocacy organizations.

DSF Alumni

Ismael always knew he was going to go to college, but he felt there was a gap in HOW to get there. After graduating in 2008, he enrolled at University of Colorado (CU) Boulder where he studied psychology. The transition to college was hard for him and it took at least one year to adjust to the new lifestyle. Throughout this time, however, Ismael had DSF Campus Advisors by his side, as well as Curtis, guiding and supporting him. Ismael graduated in 2012 and moved back to his family’s home to start saving up for a down payment on a house.
