Students Build Brighter Futures in the DSF Future Center at Bruce Randolph School

DSF College Advisor Ms. Garcia speaks to community supporters about how she helps students at Bruce Randolph School achieve their college dreams in the DSF Future Center.

For three students at Bruce Randolph School, the future has never looked brighter thanks to support they have found in the DSF Future Center. Erica, Yulissa, and Roger will graduate this spring, and college is the next stop on their roadmaps. Erica plans to attend Arapahoe Community College, eventually transferring to the University of Colorado Boulder, and will study architecture. Yulissa will attend Regis University, studying forensic science. Roger hopes to attend Emily Griffith Technical College, pursuing a certificate in massage therapy.

Over the last several months, they have worked closely with Ms. Garcia, their DSF College Advisor, in the Future Center at their school. The students say Ms. Garcia has helped them navigate the obstacles of making the transition from high school to college. With many logistical boxes to check before they can enroll in college classes, the students know that Ms. Garcia will help ensure their success every step of the way.

“She gets us the information we need from colleges—links to applications, fee waivers, scholarship opportunities,” Roger says of Ms. Garcia. “Beyond that, she gives us the emotional encouragement we need as first generation college students. She is always so positive, which motivates us.”

Ms. Garcia’s impact reaches far beyond the walls of the Future Center. Students say that their knowledge of the college-going process has changed the directions of their conversations both in and out of school.

“With the Future Center as a resource, you start to talk more about college with friends,” says Erica. “It somehow makes conversations with friends a lot stronger—we have a future, we look forward to it, and we are proud of it.”

“We are proud of each other,” Yulissa adds. “When we started receiving acceptance letters, we celebrated with each other, because we were grateful. With the Future Center here, we support each other a lot more.”
