As students filled the auditorium at Abraham Lincoln High School (Lincoln) on Senior Signing Day, an event organized by Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) College Advisors Emma Kepes and Luis Antezana, the upbeat and exciting music matched the room’s mood. At the event, more than 100 Lincoln seniors took the stage as underclassmen applauded their hard work in preparing for college, military, or apprenticeships after high school.
Senior Signing Day at Lincoln is a chance to celebrate the hard work of students, emphasizing DSF’s mission of helping students on their journeys to and through college. Though this is the third year for the event at Lincoln, it was the first under the guidance of DSF College Advisors Emma and Luis, who added their own special flair.
In addition to students signing a large banner commemorating their time in high school, Lincoln students also had their name and intended career path read aloud by “commissioners” from 19 colleges, universities, technical schools, and military, much like the recent NFL Draft. Then, they took a photo with Lincoln Principal Larry Irvin who held up a jersey with their school or pathway name and a big number one on the back, signifying that all students are first-round picks.
The “commissioners” included staff from the various colleges and universities as well as Lincoln teachers like Mariajose Ytterberg, a science teacher and a graduate of Metropolitan State University of Denver. “I love to be here because I have the opportunity to change lives. To see the students go to the next stage is beautiful,” she says.
Fabian Sanchez, a senior at Lincoln who plans to study welding at the Community College of Denver, said the event made him proud to celebrate his accomplishments and excited to continue his journey.
Many students at Lincoln and across Denver Public Schools (DPS) will benefit from DSF’s financial support when they begin college in the fall and become DSF Scholars. Join us as we celebrate them, as well as our DSF Scholar college graduates, at the DSF Graduation Celebration on June. RSVP for the event here. We hope to see you there!
